Cultural Tourism Customer Service Training Schedule

Week-by-week breakdown

'Cultural Tourism Customer Service Tour Guide Training' (a rather long title, which I usually shorten) is offered to either 2nd or 3rd year trainees, depending on numbers.  As a Tour Guide (whether it is your permanent of temporary role), you will most probably always be talking about either PEOPLE or PLACES (indeed, often 'people' as they relate to 'places' and various 'times in history').  Therefore, people and places are the main themes of this training.

The best way to develop your skills as a tour guide, is to actually DO IT! ... But in terms of training, this means simulated practice, or - as it is known - 'simulated learning'.  This, among other things, means giving real talks/presentations, only that your 'guests/customers' are other trainees.  I will talk more about simulated learning in Week 1.

Group Formation / Talk Topic Selection
Group formation and topic selection will take place in Week 1.  A class of 39 trainees will make 13 groups (3 trainees in each group).  The 15 topics, below, will be put into a box on separate pieces of paper.  A trainee from each group will blindly choose a topic from the box.  When there are only two remaining topics, the trainer will take these 'spare' topics out of the box, and any group dissatisfied with their topic can swap.  Also, groups can swap topics with other groups.

Activity Process
Each week, a group of three guides/trainees will present a talk about one of the topics listed below.  Example:  if your topic is 'Relationships - The elderly', each guide in your group should talk for 15 minutes about this topic.  When each guide finishes, your trainer will provide between five and eight minutes of feedback, before the next guide begins his/her talk.
